Knots for Braided Line: Which Ones Hold and Which Ones Slip
Dockrig is reader-supported. When you buy through links on this page, we may earn a commission.
Braid is slick and thin, so knots that grip mono can slip in it. For braid to hook or lure, tie a Palomar or a modified uni. For braid to leader, tie a double uni or an FG. Skip the improved clinch on braid.
The fix in every case is more contact. Doubled line, more turns, or wraps that bite into a leader.

Why braid slips
2 things work against a knot in braid.
- The surface is smooth. Braid is woven from fine fibers, often with a coating. There's little friction between turns.
- It's thin for its test. PowerPro lists 20 lb braid at .009 in. on Tackle Warehouse. Mono of the same test is a lot thicker. A thin line has less surface in contact inside the knot.
Mono also stretches and bites into itself as a knot closes. Braid barely stretches. So the turns don't lock the same way.
That's why braid knots use doubled line or extra turns. Both add contact. Nothing fancier than that.
Knots that work in braid and knots that slip
| Knot | In braid | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Palomar | holds | doubled line through the eye |
| Modified uni (through the eye twice) | holds | 2 strands at the eye plus 8 to 10 turns |
| Double uni | holds, braid to leader | 8 to 10 turns on the braid side |
| FG knot | holds, braid to leader | 15 to 20 wraps grip the leader |
| Non-slip loop | holds with 6 turns | Kreh's braid figure |
| Improved clinch | slips | single strand, few turns, no bite |
| Arbor knot on a bare spool | spool spins | the knot holds, the line rotates |
The improved clinch is a mono knot. In braid, the turns can slide open under load. If you like the clinch, tie it in a fluorocarbon leader instead.
To see how thin braid runs, look at a label. The Daiwa J-Braid x8 in 6 lb lists .003 in. That's why a clinch has so little to bite on.
The modified uni for braid
A plain uni can slip in braid. The modified version passes the line through the eye twice. That puts 2 strands around the eye before the uni turns.
The double pass adds grip, so it takes 6 to 8 turns, not the 8 to 10 we give for a plain uni in braid on the uni knot page.
Pass the braid through the eye twice. You get a small double ring at the eye.
Step 1. Pass the braid through the eye twice. Tap to enlarge. Lay the tag back along the standing line to form a loop. About 6 in. of tag is enough.
Step 2. Lay the tag back along the standing line to form a loop. Tap to enlarge. Wrap the tag around both lines inside the loop 8 to 10 times.
Step 3. Wrap the tag around both lines inside the loop 8 to 10 times. Tap to enlarge. Wet it, pull the tag, then pull the standing line to slide it down. Trim, leaving about 1/8 in.
Step 4. Wet it, pull the tag, then pull the standing line to slide it down. Tap to enlarge.
Keep the double ring neat in step 1. If the 2 strands cross, the knot closes lumpy.
Step 4 needs a firm pull. Braid turns bed down only when pulled hard. Wrap the braid around a pen or a glove first. Thin braid can cut skin.

The same braid shows different diameters on 2 retailer pages. 10, 15 and 40 lb don't match. The gaps are small, about .001 in., but they're real.
For knots, the takeaway is simple. Braid is thin at any of these numbers. Use the spool label for leader pairing. See the FG knot page for braid-to-leader pairs.
Which knot for which job
- Braid straight to a frog or topwater: Palomar. 50 to 65 lb braid in heavy cover is common.
- Braid to a fluoro leader for finesse: double uni or FG. 15 to 20 lb braid, 6 to 10 lb leader.
- Braid to a swivel on a Carolina rig: Palomar or modified uni. See swivels and snaps.
- Braid to a jerkbait: non-slip loop with 6 turns, or a loop in a leader.
- Slip bobber on braid: use a stop that grips braid. See the bobber stop knot.
- Droppers: tie them in a mono leader. See the dropper loop.
Braid to leader: double uni or FG?
Both hold in braid. The choice comes down to the joint size and how much time you have on the water.
The double uni is 2 uni knots pulled together. It's quick to tie in a boat with cold hands, and it's easy to learn in an evening at home. The joint has 2 barrels of turns, so it's bulkier.
The FG wraps braid around the leader 15 to 20 times. It makes a slim joint that slides through guides more easily. It takes practice, and you have to hold tension the whole time.
On a short leader that stays outside the guides, the bulk barely matters. On a leader longer than the rod, we'd lean toward the FG.
How braid, mono and fluoro differ at the knot
| Line | Stretch | Surface | Knot habit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Braid | very low | slick, thin for its test | needs doubled line or extra turns |
| Mono | high | softer, bites into itself | most standard knots grip |
| Fluoro | low to medium | hard, stiff | wet well, seat slowly |
Mono is the forgiving one. Its turns stretch and bite as the knot closes, which is why the improved clinch was built around it.
Fluoro is harder and stiffer, so it needs a slow, wet pull to close cleanly without kinking. Braid is the slick one, and nearly every braid rule comes from that.
Checking a braid knot
- Turns: the full count, lying side by side.
- Doubled strands: parallel at the eye, not crossed.
- Tag: about 1/8 in., not frayed.
- Pull test: hold the hook with pliers and pull the braid around a gloved hand for 2 or 3 seconds.
If the tag has moved or the turns have opened, the knot slipped. Retie it with more turns rather than pulling it tighter.
Trimming and tying braid
Braid is hard to cut with dull clippers. It frays. A pair of nail clippers that handles 12 lb mono fine will often just crush 30 lb braid and leave a fuzzy tag that's hard to rethread. Use sharp braid scissors or a clipper rated for braid.
Leave about 1/8 in. of tag. A tag cut flush can pull back into the knot. On mono, 1/16 in. is common. Braid gets a bit more.
Wet every knot before you pull. Braid doesn't heat like mono, but the leader side does. On a double uni or FG, that leader is usually fluoro, and fluoro tends to kink or curl if it gets cinched down dry and fast.
Common mistakes
- Tying an improved clinch in braid. Use a Palomar or modified uni.
- Too few turns. 5 turns that work on 10 lb mono aren't enough on 10 lb braid.
- Soft final pull. Braid knots need a hard seat.
- Bare spool. Add backing or tape before you spool braid.
- Tag trimmed flush. Leave 1/8 in.
Common Questions
Does braid need a leader?
Not for every knot or lure. Many anglers tie braid straight to frogs and topwaters. In clear water, a fluoro leader is common.
If you add a leader, the connection knot matters most. Tie a double uni or an FG.
Is the Palomar the strongest knot for braid?
The Palomar is widely used on braid because the doubled line adds grip. It's easy to tie, too.
Can you use super glue on braid knots?
Some anglers add a drop of glue. A knot that's tied and seated right doesn't need it.
